Born in Shanghai, Li-Wei moved to Australia at the age of
13. He accepted a Scholarship to study with Ralph Kirshbaum
at the Royal Northern College of Music (UK) in 1995. During
his studies, Li-Wei has won numerous prizes including the
First Prize in the Adam International Cello Competition, a
special Distinction in the Rostropovich International Cello
Competition. He uses a 1721-year Filius Andreas Guarnerius
Cello supported by the Australian Government.
Li-Wei is currently a professor of the Royal Northern College
of Music (UK) and guest professor of Shanghai Conservatory
of Music and Central Conservatory of Music. Some of the achievements
he has scored so far are as below:
- 1989 First Prize of China National Cello Competition.
- 1992 First Prize of Australia National Cello Competition.
- 1993 Australia ABC Young Performer of the Year.
- 1997Commonwealth Musician of the Year.
- Special Prize of Rostropovich International Cello Competition,
Paris.
- First Prize of New Zealand International Cello Competition.
- 1998 Silver Medal of Cello of Tchaikovsky International
Music Competition.
- 2001 First Prize of Naumburg International Cello Competition,
New York.
- BBC New Generation Artists Scheme.
- 2002 The Young Australian of the Year.
